PLANTERSVILLE — The Dallas County High School Hornets defeated the rival Southside High School Panthers 15-0 in an area game on Friday.
Willie Moore, head baseball coach of the Hornets (20-8, 3-2), said his team was strong on offense and consistent on defense.
“I think we were able to do a little better job of hitting and running today, and we stole a few bases,” Moore said. “We didn’t make very many errors today, so we were pretty consistent.”
Southside head baseball coach John Solomon said the young Panthers (1-6, 0-4) played well in spots, but are looking to improve.
“We actually had good pitching today, but we just didn’t have good defense,” Solomon said. “We hit the ball and we put the ball in play pretty good, but they made plays behind their pitcher. Other than that, I think we had a pretty good game besides the defeat. We just have to capitalize when we hit and we’ve got to make plays behind our pitcher.”
The Hornets got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when a sac fly by Justin Moreland scored Kevin Simmons to give Dallas County a 1-0 lead.
The Hornets added another run in the inning when Jeffery Allday hit a line drive to left center field that scored Troy Tolbert from third base and pushed the lead to 2-0.
Dallas County carried over the momentum to the second inning, as Simmons hit a ball in the gap that allowed him to triple and drive in teammates Lane Warren, Ricky Smith and Wyatt Sanders to give the Hornets a 5-0 lead.
Moreland provided more offense later in the inning when he hit the ball to center and drove in Simmons again to make it 6-0.
A wild pitch allowed Dallas County’s Corey Ingram to score from third and push the lead to 7-0.
Simmons came up big again for Dallas County in the bottom of the third inning when he hit a line drive in the gap that rolled to the left field wall, which allowed him to double and drive in Warren and Smith again making it a 9-0 game.
Allday recorded another RBI in the bottom of the fourth inning, as his bunt allowed Tolbert to score from third and make the score 10-0.
D.J. Stiles and Sanders also recorded RBIs for Dallas County, and Simmons helped score another runner with a sac fly in the bottom of the fourth.
Mark Black and Mario Oliver each had hits for Southside.
The Hornets will take the field again Saturday, April 7 against Wenonah at home starting at noon.
The Panthers will travel to Bibb County Tuesday, April 10 for an area game at 5 p.m.
