The annual Relay for Life may not be until Friday, April 27 but teams for Selma-Dallas County Relay for Life are not letting up just yet.

Nearly 45 teams made up of churches, schools and individuals have registered, and with fundraising efforts not slowing down, organizers said teams are excited.

“It seems to be going well — a lot of teams are doing yard sales and golf teams. The kids at the school are really excited about fundraising,” said Relay co-chair Veronica Brown. “I think things will be on target.”

Brown said individual and business sponsorships from $300 to $2,500 are still available.

“We’ll have a list of sponsors on a Relay for Life T-shirt and a company logo,” Brown said. “For $300 to $500 your name is printed on a shirt and for $1,000, you’ll have your name and a medium size logo and for $2,500, you’ll have your name (and) a large company logo.

“We would like our sponsorship to at least be $20,000. We’re looking for businesses to step out and be a sponsor,” Brown said.

Organizers will also hold the seventh annual Sherri S. James Survivors Banquet Monday, April 23 at 6 p.m. inside the Carl C. Morgan Convention Center. The banquet is free to all cancer survivors.

“We’re asking any business or individual who would be interested in sponsoring a table for the survivor’s banquet to contact me at 412-6238,” Brown said. “The cost is $250 and they will be recognized during the banquet with names on the program and on a sign on a table.”

Bank night for the relay will be held Thursday, April 26 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Brown said this year’s goal is still $100,000.

“That’s what we’re anticipating this year,” Brown said. “I think we’re right in line … I think the teams are really excited. Cedar Park (Elementary) will hold a mini relay on April 23 and use the event as a teaching moment; the Vaughan (Medical Center) team has been really excited and competitive … it’s a real enthusiasm.”

Brown said online participation has also increased.

“Many people are participating online,” Brown said.

The Relay for Life will be April 27 at 6 p.m. inside Memorial Stadium.
