When the Wallace Community College-Selma Patriots men’s basketball team takes the court next season, it’ll do so with a new coaching staff.
New men’s head basketball coach Foster Davis and assistant coach Chris Harrell are the new coaches for the Patriots.
Davis said he’s excited about the opportunity and appreciative of Wallace President Dr. James Mitchell and athletic director Marcus Hannah for the opportunity.
“I feel blessed to have this job and to try to come out here and help improve this program for Wallace Community College and for Selma,” Davis said. “Basketball is a sport that I love. I coached it for over 17 years over at Selma High.”
Davis said his time at Selma High allowed him to coach great players, such as Julius “Doc” Robinson who went on to play at Auburn, his son Brandon “Scooter” Davis who played at Alabama, and Wendell Lewis, who currently plays at Mississippi State.
Davis said the Patriots are looking to compete and establish themselves in a conference full of tough opponents.
“I’m just going to try to do the best that we can with what we’ve got,” Davis said. “We’re a small junior college, and I know there’s some big schools around like Shelton State, Lawson and Wallace in Hanceville, but we’re going to try to be competitive and put a good team on the floor.”
Harrell said he’s excited about the job, which serves as a homecoming of sorts.
“I played here back in the 80s, and to come back and be able to coach the college that you played for feels pretty good,” Harrell said. “I’m excited and I think we’re going to have a good group of guys that are coming back and some that we’re going to sign. We’re going to have a good group and we’re looking to be competitive next year.”
