SAFFORD — While the families of nearly two dozen school children were able to be with their child Monday evening following a tragic accident involving a Dallas County school bus and a passenger truck, the family of the truck’s driver was left to wonder what happened.
Skyler Ace King, 19, was killed when the Chevrolet Silverado he was driving, collided into the stopped school bus on Alabama Hwy. 5 one mile south of Safford Monday afternoon.
Officials had withheld King’s name until Tuesday, giving authorities time to ensure all family members had been notified.
According to an Alabama State Trooper report, King struck the bus as it was stopped on the road, set to unload children.
Troopers said the bus had 20 occupants on it at the time of the accident — including the driver. They were all transported to Vaughan Regional Medical Center for evaluation and treatment.
King’s family announced Tuesday a memorial service will be held at Orrville Baptist Church on Thursday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Steven Rutherford officiating. Lawrence Funeral Home is directing.
King is a 2009 graduate of Wilcox Academy and is the brother of Morgan students Chelsea and Hunter Rogers.
In response to King’s death, the Morgan Academy Student Government Association sent out an email to the “Morgan Family” providing information on how the community could help support King’s family.
The club has worked to establish a fund to help the “Rogers family in this time of sorrow and financial need.” Those wanting to make a contribution can do so by dropping off the donation, marked “Rogers Family,” at the Morgan Academy office.
