According to the Federal Trade Commission, 9 million Americans are victims of identity theft each year and Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sheryl Smedley said safe destruction of outdated personal and financial information is important to protecting a person’s identity from thieves.

“This allows the small business community and citizens to safely dispose of any outdated financials, personal records such as credit card statements, and tax records free of charge,” Smedley said, adding that the shredded material is recycled.  “Criminals have made identity theft into a million dollar industry and this project will allow our community the opportunity to properly dispose of their personal outdated records onsite.”
