The details surrounding a Thursday afternoon shooting on First Avenue in Selma are few and incomplete. But what Selma Police officials do know is that a 16-year-old pregnant woman has been shot, is in serious condition and those responsible have yet to be arrested.

Shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday, police responded to a call at a home near the intersection of First Avenue and Lawrence Street. There, they did not find the victim, but rather found a number of witnesses who said the victim was transported to the hospital in a private vehicle.

“We learned she was transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound in the head area,” Selma Chief of Police William T. Riley said. “We also know that she is three to four months pregnant.”

Riley, who did not identify the victim, said she suffered a gunshot wound to the head, above the left eye. He reported later Thursday evening that the bullet appeared to strike the victim in the head, but did not go into the skull. Riley said the bullet went under the skin and then came out a little further on the head. Investigators believe she was struck with a small caliber round.

“This was a drive-by shooting,” Riley said. “We have a number of scenarios we are working right now.”

He added the vehicle believed to have been involved in the shooting, a white SUV, was found and that investigators were running down leads involving who the driver and unknown passengers were.

Thursday evening, Riley released information saying investigators had collected evidence that showed shots were fired from the front porch in the direction of the SUV as it drove past. The SUV did have a bullet hole in the front section.

“We recovered a number of shell casings in the front yard of the home and one shell casing on the front porch where the victim was shot,” Riley said.

Although no one has been arrested or charged in the shooting incident, Riley said later in the evening that a number of people have been “detained for questioning.”

As for the victim, Riley said detectives were able to talk to her shortly before she was taken away form CT scans and other tests. She is reportedly in stable but critical condition, Riley said.

At the time of the shooting, the victim is believed to have been sitting on the porch of the First Avenue home and that there were other people around her at the time.
