Nearly 24 hours after a 16-year-old pregnant teenager was shot in the head by a bullet fired in a drive-by shooting, Selma city and police officials gathered Friday afternoon to say her condition is improving and those they believe responsible for the shooting are in custody.

During a press conference in front of Selma City Hall, Selma Chief of Police William T. Riley and Selma Mayor George Evans were joined by detectives and investigators to provide details on the individuals arrested and the charges they face.

“We have taken these three into custody for their involvement in the Thursday afternoon shooting on 1st Avenue,” Riley said. “There are others we are continuing to look for and we are still investigating what might have led to this in the first place.”

Shortly before 4 p.m., police said a white SUV drove by a home on the 1400 block of 1st Avenue and opened fire on those residents sitting on the porch.

One of those bullets struck the 16-year-old above the left eye. The bullet never entered the skull, Riley said, adding the bullet exited without causing critical damage.

“She is a very blessed young lady,” Evans said during the conference. “I had the chance to spend some time with her and she is truly, truly blessed to be alive.”

But, the suspects in the SUV were not the only ones firing weapons. Police reported individuals on the porch or in the front yard fired at the SUV, striking the car at least once. Also, bullets fired in the direction of the car and missed, were found lodged in a home across the street.

The suspects in the SUV quickly left the scene and ditched the car a few blocks from the shooting scene.

Those in the car are believed to have been Selma resident Demetrius Reese, 21, and Leroy Jackson Jr., 18, both of Selma.

According to authorities, Jackson was driving the car, while Reese is the one believed to have done the shooting and hit the pregnant teen in the head.

Reese has been charged with first-degree assault and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling. Both charges carry a bond of $15,000.

Jackson has been charged with first-degree assault for his involvement in driving the getaway car. His bond was set at $15,000.

Jenorice Jones, a 34-year-old woman who was near the house at the time of the shooting, was taken into custody and charged with discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle for shooting at the SUV. She is also charged with discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling, since some of the rounds she fired at the SUV missed and entered the home across the street.

Both of Jones’ charges carry a $15,000 bond.
