Entering their second week of spring practices dressed in full equipment, the Meadowview Christian School Trojans continued preparing for the upcoming season on Tuesday.

Lebo Jones, head football coach of Meadowview Christian School, said one of the things the Trojans have been focusing on is making some tweaks to their triple-option attack.

“We’ve been working on a new offense,” Jones said. “We’ve been putting in the Inside Veer, trying to work with everybody on that, and it’s a little different from what we ran last year. We’re working on the flexbone and putting people in motion this year.”

Jones said he thinks speed and senior leadership will be significant factors for the Trojans when they hit the gridiron in the fall.

“Right now, we’ve got some good speed in the backfield, we’re just trying to find some lineman that will step up and do what we want them to do,” Jones said. “I think our strength is going to be our speed. A lot of our backs are seniors and have been playing a long time and know what to do. Our quarterback is a senior and we’ve got some good, senior leadership, hopefully, this year on the team.”

For Jones, this is his first spring as head football coach of Meadowview after taking over the position midway through last season.

He said it’s been a good experience, but he wants the Trojans to boost the number of players they have dressed out entering the season.

“Things are going well right now, but I wish we had a few more out,” Jones said. “We have 22 (players) out here right now. We’ve got a couple of guys that are injured, so I’m hoping we’ll have 25 or 30 by the time fall comes around.”

Jones added that spring practices serve as a good way to get players ready for the physicality of the upcoming season, and while Meadowview won’t play an official spring game this year, they’ll travel to South Montgomery Academy for a controlled scrimmage on Friday at 5 p.m. to help them in that preparation.

“I like to use spring as a way to get guys used to contact, and we do a lot of hitting and a lot of fundamental drills, so we’ll be ready going into summer workouts,” Jones said. “We’ll have all our contact done, so we can just focus on getting in shape this summer.”
