The funeral arrangements for 17-year-old Je’Terius T. Moore are incomplete, as is the investigation into the officer-related shooting that lead to his death Thursday afternoon.

Officials with the investigation confirmed Friday that Moore was the suspect police were engaged with Thursday afternoon on the 300 block of Tenth Avenue.

Selma Chief of Police William Riley said the officer in the shooting, who has not been identified by officials, has been placed on administrative leave, which is normal procedure.

Also normal procedure is the fact the Alabama Bureau of Investigation was called in to lead the investigation into the shooting.

“This is a tragic incident,” Riley said. “We definitely feel for the family because of the loss of life. Our hearts and our thoughts are with them at this time.”

Although he could not provide full details, Riley did confirm the officer was responding to a disturbance call at the home.

“When the officer arrived, he did become engaged with an individual with a gun,” Riley said. “A shot was fired and that shot resulted in that particular individual losing his life.”

Paramedics were quickly dispatched to the scene and transported Moore to Vaughan Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Riley would not say how many other people were in or around the house at the time of the shooting, but said the incident took place outside of the Tenth Avenue home.

Anytime an officer is involved in a shooting where the suspect is killed, Riley said the department provides any counseling the officer might need.
