Selma Police are now investigating the events surrounding the death of a 6-month-old girl Thursday afternoon in downtown Selma.

According to the few details available from police officials, a woman, who was driving at the time, contacted 911 saying her child was having difficulty breathing. “At that time, she was instructed to pull over for an ambulance to respond,” Selma Chief of Police William Riley said.

Shortly before 1:30 p.m., Officer Kenneth Keith responded to the corner of Broad Street and Furniss Avenue, where he found the child was unresponsive and not breathing.

“Officer Keith began CPR on the infant until the ambulance arrived,” Riley said. “He continued CPR on the infant until it was transported to a local hospital. The infant was pronounced dead at the hospital.”

Riley said detectives responded to the hospital and spoke with the infant’s mother and other witnesses. He also added an autopsy is scheduled to be performed on the body Friday.

“At this point, we are still gathering information, still interviewing witnesses,” Riley said. “It is our hope to have more details [Friday].”

Police did not release the name of the infant who died or any other family information.
