On this Memorial Day weekend, we pause to remember those who have died for our country as well as remembering family members who have left us a rich legacy inspiring us to accomplish even greater things in the years to come. We remember their integrity, courage and other strengths that have been molded into our lives by their example.

During the past few days, I have been watching the next generation lay the foundation for their own legacy. Tuesday evening was all about athletics. Praise Park Nazarene joined with Golden Ranch restaurant in providing an awesome banquet for the Martin Middle School Spring Athletic Banquet.

There were some 160 people in attendance for a standing room only audience as coaches presented certificates and trophies recognizing the athletic accomplishments of the students.

My family and I left the school to go back to our church, where we were hosting the Dallas County High School track team for their end of season banquet. They enjoyed dinner prepared by Linda Dolbare. Following dinner, they watched a DVD presentation on the season highlighting the many successes.

Coach Robert Dolbare recognized the many accomplishments of the year. This group has some strong camaraderie that is exciting to observe.

What is absolutely amazing is that our team accomplished so much with no facilities at DCHS. We have no track, no hurdles, no long jump sand pit and nothing else except a great spirit that keeps them going. Will someone out there step up to the plate and help our track team?

Thursday evening saw the largest Baccalaureate attendance in recent years at Valley Grande Baptist Church. Pastor Clarke Skelton gave a challenging message to our DCHS grads.

A mile away, the Martin Middle School Band gave a usual stellar performance. It was an awesome night. Band Director, Les Boley, recognized band members who had excelled at the state competition. All enjoyed an exciting moment when Mr. Boley presented to the crowd the trophy received by the band for a superior rating at the state competition.

Boley said it was the first to be won by a Dallas County band since the mid 1980’s. Congratulations indeed.

Extracurricular activities of any kind require so much more of our students. They have to become leaders showing example to their peers. There are requirements by coaches and faculty members that require discipline and hard work. They really are laying the foundation for their own legacy for generations to come.

It has been a whirlwind of a week. But, seeing so much future in the youth of Valley Grande….makes it “Simply Beautiful!”
