Finding fans for the elderly

The Selma/Dallas Youth Ambassadors are out in force asking for help with their “Be a fan of the elderly” project.

This is a summer project the ambassadors have coordinated the last four years to help the elderly and needy families keep cool during the summer months.

“The best feeling in the world is to see someone who looks like my grandmother come to the door with a thank you and a smile,” Selma City Councilmember and ambassador advisor Bennie Ruth Crenshaw said. “In many homes there are no air conditioners, only fans.”

This project is motivated by the fact many older people will not turn on their air conditioners because they fear the high cost of electrical bills.

According to Crenshaw, there are many homes with children that don’t have air conditioners or fans.

The ambassadors were able to give away 80 fans last summer with the help of Bernice Campbell and the Venusettes Club, Earle Ashe, owner of A-1 Sales, Mr. and Mrs. Charles and Gloria Smith, Veronica Brown, Corey Bowie, attorney Danny Crenshaw and several others throughout the community.

The Selma/Dallas Youth Ambassadors hope to top the number donated last summer.

If you would like to donate a fan or give a donation to purchase fans, please call the city council’s Office at 874-1234, or Crenshaw at 349-2006 or 875-7099.
