The 51st Annual Bud Burns Dixie Junior Invitational came to a close on Wednesday, as the boys champions were crowned and one Selma youth made tournament history.
The boys completed their final day of play on Wednesday, as Selma’s Ford Manderson was the overall winner and captured the Otey Crisman Trophy — a trophy won by such players as Masters winner Bubba Watson, and Stewart Cink — with a total of 207 and shooting 6-under-par in 54 holes.Manderson also captured the tournament’s other two awards — the Bud Burns Award for the golfer with the lowest 54-hole total, and the Paul Grist Trophy for most outstanding Selma golfer.
Tommy Burns, PGA golf professional with the Selma Country Club, said it’s the first time since 1991 that a player from Selma has won the tournament as well as all three awards.
“It was a great tournament, great weather, and a great winner,” Burns said. “This is the first time in 21 years that a Selma kid’s won the tournament and won all three trophies. That’s happened one time before — last time was Will Pearce. Ford shot 6-under-par, just played great and I couldn’t be happier for him.”
Manderson said he’s glad he won, and it’s something he’s been dreaming about for a long time.
“I think it was the home course helping have a little edge,” Manderson said. “I’ve been playing bad, and I don’t know where it came out of, but I’m just glad it happened these past two days. It feels good. I’ve been wanting to win this tournament since I was six. I didn’t ever think this would happen, but it happened. It’s a good feeling.”
Burns said he’s pleased with the increase in golfers this year, as the tournament pushed its number to 117, and it’s something he hopes will continue for future events.
“Our golf tournament grew this year in the neighborhood of about 25 more entries than we had last year,” Burns said. “I attribute that to taking it online with the Alabama Junior Golf Association, and we are going to try to continue keeping that relationship with them. We’re going to expand our emails out next year and try to bring in Northwest Florida a little bit more. If that happens, I believe we’ll move our number of entries to 175 instead of 117.”
Burns said he also hopes to keep the number of female participants growing.
“We want to keep the girls [group] growing,” Burns said. “The girls have continued to grow every year. We had 19 this year. The first year we started, we had four, and every year it has continued to grow a little bit. Next year, I hope we get in the neighborhood of 25-30 girls.”
Other top finishers for the boys include Gus Colvin of Selma, who captured first place for the 10-and-under group with a total of 87, shooting 17-over-par 70.
Jones Free of Marion Junction finished second in the boys 10 and under with a total of 89, shooting 19-over-par, while John Raynowska of Northport finished third with a total of 92, shooting 22-over-par.
