Every year, one date can be circled as unlucky, but in 2012, there are three dates to circle — three Friday the 13ths. What makes today’s Friday the 13th so special is that it is the third and final Friday the 13th of the year. The eerie part is that each of the Friday the 13ths in 2012 have all occurred 13 weeks apart. According to the International Business Times, this has not happened since 1984.

People associate all kinds of abnormalities and bad luck occurrences with the doomed day.

The day is believed to be hexed because, in numerology, the number 12 is perfect and complete, but 13 complicates that perfect number. For example, there were 12 disciples, but at the Last Supper there were 13 at the dinner table. Friday was the day Jesus was crucified and so these and many more reasons combined, give Friday the 13th a bad rap.

Studies have even shown that there are twice as many car wrecks on the 13th than on the 6th of that month.

Considering the varied beliefs and practices that go along with the day, we went to a great resource for an opinion about whether or not the day really is cursed — children.

The three and four-year-old class at Rock a Bye Rosie’s in Selma gave great insight into their thoughts and opinions about the day. Half of the class of 10 said there was no such thing as bad luck, and they thought it was just silly.

The other half said it really could be true. Many said they believe in ghosts and monsters, and four said their house was haunted. Here are their thoughts regarding the “unlucky day.”

“Bad luck means you do something bad or you lose something,” Corbyn Boyd said. Boyd said he was most afraid of giant robots on Friday the 13th, or just any day at all.

Both Quinniya Walker and Trenton Thomas said they were afraid of monsters, and Thomas added he was specifically concerned about blue monsters.

“Yes, I opened an umbrella inside,” Thomas said. He nodded when asked if this gave him bad luck.

Faith Irwin had much to add about the topic, and said she believed in ghosts.

“When I’m in the dark I say to the ghosts ‘boo!’” Irwin said. She said eight is her lucky number.

Michael Lowe explained one of his fears about a previous Friday the 13th.

“The cat it scratched my face…it was black,” Lowe said.

Buddies Zackery Lopez and Jamarcus Bennett both said that bad luck is real.

“I like the number three,” Lopez said about his lucky number, and what would bring him good luck on Friday the 13th.
