Along with the Selma City School System and Dallas County Schools, Selma’s collegiate system saw the return of students this week.
Selma University, a Christian Bible college, had more than 500 students return to its campus on Monday. President of Selma University, Dr. Alvin A. Cleveland said everything is looking very good at the start of a new school year and there is an expansion on the way. Registration concluded on Monday and he said this was a busy time for the school.
“We started with registration on Wednesday and we have been busy ever since so things are looking very good,” Cleveland said. “Its good to see so many returning students because that’s always a good sign when they come back after having spent a year or two years here. It is always an exciting sign because it lets you know that you are meeting their needs and they are satisfied with what you are doing.“
The students returned this year to find a new program available — An EKG program that trains students in the medical field.
“We did start the EKG program in Allied Healthcare,” Cleveland said. “The director set a maximum for 15 students in that program but we also have the Certified Nursing Assistant Program and between these programs should be somewhere around 120 students.”
But he said the biggest program at Selma University remains their Religion Program. Selma University offers a Bachelor’s of Arts in General Studies and this includes focuses on Bible, theology and Christian Education concentrations.
Cleveland said the school is currently operating at full capacity so they plan to make some changes.
“We do want to do some additional classrooms but we don’t know what time we will be able to get started on those,” Cleveland said. “But that is one of our goals in the future is to add those classrooms. We are at capacity when it comes to class space.”
Cleveland said he was not sure when these additions would begin construction but assured that this project is in the works.
