Selma stays healthy and keeps active

Since moving to Selma, I’ve incorporated morning jogs in to my daily routine in an effort to get more exercise. And I have to say; it’s been a pleasant surprise to see that I’m not the only one who participates in this morning ritual.

While jogging on the track at Bloch Park, I have seen people from all walks of life starting their day off with a good dose of healthy exercise. Senior citizens, young adults and even entire families have been walking or jogging the half-mile track.

With so many reports of obesity and Type 2 diabetes increasing in Alabama, it’s refreshing to see community members take interest in their health and get out there to support a healthy lifestyle.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Alabama is among the top states affected by obesity. The CDC reports that more than 35% of Alabama residents are obese. So, seeing so many Selma residents combat this problem is a great sight.

The Bloch Park track also features workout stations along its path where citizens can exercise and strengthen specific areas of their body, a feature I have seen many citizens use.

Along with jogging at Bloch Park, I’ve also participated in a 5:30 a.m. yoga class at the Selma-Dallas County YMCA, which to my surprise had several attendees that also woke up before the sun for some stress-relieving yoga.

The YMCA also offers intense-exercise classes, which I look forward to trying out, like “step and sculpt” and “body blast.”

Other than the Bloch Park track and the YMCA, there are other fun exercise outlets in Selma for citizens to partake in, such as the upcoming 3rd Annual Integrity Worldwide Run for Kenya 5K and one-mile Fun Run, which will begin at Bloch Park. The run is scheduled for Oct. 13 at 9 a.m.

After speaking with Averee Hicks, co-founder of Integrity Worldwide, I discovered that many Selma residents and even outsiders look forward to participating in this charity run each year. Last year there were 191 participants.

And the best part about this 5K is not only are you doing your body well by exercising, but you are also helping those in need by supporting a great cause.

So, I encourage all Selma citizens to get up a little earlier or take some time after work and exercise. Whether you’re walking, jogging or just taking the dog for a stroll, every bit counts. Not only will your body thank you, but you will also feel stress melt away.
