A Selma Police officer is recovering from injuries sustained Thursday evening after a car, driven by a suspect leaving the scene of a fight, struck him.
Selma Chief of Police William Riley said officers were dispatched to the 1300 block of Highland Avenue — the Winn-Dixie Shopping Center — in reference to a fight between a man and woman.
When the officer arrived, he found the two in an argument outside their separate vehicles. At that time, the officer directed the man to get back into his vehicle and retrieve his driver’s license.
Instead of retrieving his information, the man, identified as Orlando Walker, attempted to drive away.
The officer gave several commands for Walker to stop the car. Walker refused and then struck the officer with the front of his car.
At this point, the officer pulled his firearm and then fired a shot in the direction of Walker, striking the front side of the passenger seat.
After the shot, Walker, who was not injured, stopped the vehicle and was removed from the vehicle by another officer, who responded to the scene.
The officer who was struck by the car suffered injuries to his knees and was taken to Vaughan Regional Medical Center for treatment.
While the investigation continues into what led to the fight between Walker and the unidentified woman, Walker, 41, has been charged with felony assault second for striking the officer with his car and placed in the Dallas County Jail under a $500,000 bond.
