The Concordia College Lady Hornets had the ball in the final seconds with a chance to win, but they came up just short, as they fell 64-63 to the Tougaloo College Lady Bulldogs at home on Thursday.
Trailing 64-63 with 1.5 seconds remaining, the Lady Hornets (3-10) threw in the ball from the far side of the court and got it to Rashida Young near midcourt.
Young got up a shot from just behind the 3-point arch, but it was deflected and fell short as the buzzer went off.
Eric Jackson, head women’s basketball coach of Concordia College, said the Lady Hornets got the shot they wanted, it just didn’t go down.
“I got what I was looking for. I was trying to get isolation with Rashida Young, and the pass didn’t really get there how we wanted it to, but it got there,” Jackson said. “We just missed the shot. That’s what happens in basketball. You make some, you miss some.”
Concordia was tied with the Lady Bulldogs (8-3) at 58-58 with 3:18 left when Malashia Chandler went one for two from the free throw line to give the Lady Hornets a 59-58 lead, as both teams were in the bonus.
The Lady Bulldogs took the lead right back, as Kierra Addison hit a pair of free throws to give Tougaloo a 60-59 lead with 2:45 left.
Daniela Thomas added two more free throws to extend the lead to 62-59, but Tierra Newell buried a shot in the lane to bring the Lady Hornets closer at 62-61 with 1:32 remaining.
Addison pushed the lead to 64-61 after another successful trip to the line with 11 seconds left.
Concordia got the ball and Chandler drove the distance of the court to hit a layup and got the foul that sent her to the line with a chance to tie the game with six seconds left.
But Chandler missed the potential game-tying free throw and the Lady Hornets were forced to foul and send Tangela Rich to the line for the Lady Bulldogs.
Rich missed both free throws and the Lady Hornets got the ball and called timeout before Young’s potential winning basket was deflected.
Young led the Lady Hornets with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Teresa Hill had 14 points and 6 boards, and Newell had 13 points.
Chasity Kearney led Tougaloo with 18 points and 20 rebounds, while Portia Craft had 14 points for the Lady Bulldogs.
The Lady Hornets were hurt by missed free throws down the stretch, as they went 14 for 27 from the line in the second half.
The Lady Hornets will take the court again Tuesday at home against Freed Hardeman starting at 5:30 p.m.
