Awford Nathaniel Cook, age 79, of Selma, AL, went home June 6, 2013 surrounded by family and friends at his home.

He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-one years, Sylvia Early Cook; parents, Willie D. and Mittie L. Cook; brothers, Grover Cook, Audley Cook and Lester Cook; sisters, Minnie Matthews, Connie Pearl Helms and Odelle Sturdivant; brothers-in-law, Hollis Matthews, Clyde Helms and Sylvester Sturdivant and sister-in-law, Hazel Cook.

He is survived by his son, Clay N. (Sara) Cook; daughter, Greta C. (Mark) Jones; brother, Daniel Cook; sister, Pauline (Clyde) Burroughs; grandchildren, Holly Peyton Jones and Jackson Mark Jones; sister-in-law, Katherine Cook and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Cook exemplified all the qualities of love to his family. He was not only the best father, but the best son, husband, grandpa, uncle and friend that one could ask for. His whole life was about serving other people and as the story goes it started by giving up a possible basketball opportunity to help his family on the farm at the age of fifteen and then moving forward as a door-to-door milkman and finishing up as a convenient store owner the last thirty years of his working career. He strongly believed in a good work ethic and always helped others. Mr. Cook was indeed a man of his word, one that you could trust and come to for anything. He loved all people and also had a passion for animals. He leaves behind a sweet companion, his cat, Angel.

Mr. Cook will be greatly missed by all, but the peace in knowing he is with his Lord, without pain and suffering, and now able to pick back up and serve again in Heaven is very comforting.

Funeral services will be Monday, June 10, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Selma Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Daniel Martin, Rev. Clarke Skelton and Rev. Earl Carswell officiating. Interment will be in Pineview Memory Gardens with Selma Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be Sunday, June 9, 2013 from 3-5:00 p.m.
