A lone burglar brazenly shattered the glass the front door of the Butler Truax Jewelers Wednesday, before making off with an untold amount of jewelry.

Workers were at the Broad Street business Wednesday replacing the glass panel while Butler Truax employees worked around one shattered display case and a shaken sense of security.

Butler Truax owner Doris Truax said employees were working to discover exactly how much jewelry had been stolen.

“We will take an inventory of the jewelry left in that case, but it was definitely a few thousand dollars worth,” Truax said.

The jewelry store moved to its current location in the Kress building in 2002, and Truax said Wednesday’s burglary was the first for the store in nearly two decades.

While the individual was able to abscond with the merchandise, Truax is confident police will be able to identify and apprehend the criminal.

“We have security cameras everywhere, and we got him on all the cameras,” Truax said.

Charles Clark, a detective with the Selma Police Department, said the incident occurred at 1:17 a.m. Wednesday and officers responded shortly thereafter.

As far as obtaining a description of the subject, and making any arrest related to this case, Clark said the department would first need to carefully inspect as much security camera footage as possible.

“We have no description of the subject at this time,” Clark said. “Whoever broke in had something over their head and was wearing gloves. They walked up from the alley and then went right to the front door.

“We are waiting to get the video from Butler Truax, as well as surrounding businesses to see if we can’t find out some more.”

Police are asking anyone who has information on the burglary or information on the suspect, to please call the Selma Police Department at 874-6611 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-44-CRIME.
