The Dallas County junior varsity football team completed an undefeated, 7-0 football season with a 6-0 shutout victory over Selma last week.

The Hornets outscored their opponents 126-78 this season and won five of their seven games by one score or less.

“We had a great group of kids,” head coach Cliff Nix said. “They are real enthusiastic and just full of energy. They loved to practice and they played hard throughout the whole season.”

Nix credits the great season to his team’s commitment to football, considering it had very limited practice time.

“We are limited on coaches so we only practiced a couple of days a week and still made it work,” Nix said.

He said that because he had 33 players, nobody had to play on both offense and defense.

In the opening game of the season, the Hornets trailed Montevallo in the final two minutes but rallied for an incredible win.

“We were down nine points with a couple of minutes left and we scored three touchdowns within two minutes,” Nix said. “We ran a kickoff back, got an interception and ran it back and then picked up a fumble and ran it back within two minutes.”

The final score was 34-22. From there, the Hornets found a groove, defeating Hale County, Marbury and Holtville by a combined 14 points the next three weeks.

In a rematch against Montevallo, Dallas County rolled 33-12.

To close the season, the Hornets defeated Mabuary 12-6 and Selma 6-0, clinching the first undefeated season in the history of Dallas County’s junior varsity football team.
