Beginning Monday, the Selma office of the American Red Cross will begin accepting application for Project Service to Help Alabamians with Relief on Energy, the assistance program for low-income elderly or disabled individuals. Funding is limited to clients with medical conditions that require electric services.
Introduced in 1982, Project SHARE was created based on an agreement between Alabama Power Company and the American Red Cross. Since 1984, 25 additional electric cooperatives and municipalities have joined the program.
The program is funded through customer pledges of participating energy suppliers.
To qualify for assistance, the family income must be within certain guidelines based on the size of the household. The head of the household must be either 62-years-old, receiving a disability check or have completed am medical statement signed by a physician.
Funds will be distributed on a first-call, first-serve basis.
Only potential clients that have picked up a physician’s statement before the scheduled appointment and have it completed before your appointment will be assisted.
Since the American Red Cross organization is responsible for administering Project SHARE funds, a Red Cross representative will interview applicants seeking financial assistance in paying their energy bill. Payments will be made directly to the energy supplier of those who qualify.
To make an appointment, contact the Project SHARE office at 874-4641 or 874-4642.
