Selma’s summer employment program could benefit from expansion

When Selma city officials announced that the 2014 summer youth employment program was the largest ever, it came as a pleasant surprise, but working four hours per day for four days is not nearly enough.
As the city looks toward finalizing its budget for the 2015 fiscal year, it should invest in the city’s youth and allocate more money toward the program.
The city is suffering from a perceived drop in sales tax revenue. Though, some speculate businesses aren’t paying their fair share.
Either way, the city should find money for the program’s expansion, whether it’s cutting down on unneeded expenses or allocating the city council’s discretionary funds.
An expanded program would not only provide much-needed additional income for area children, but allow city departments to accomplish more work during the summer months.
The two sessions are a good idea. Perhaps the city could continue the trend, but longer days could go a long way toward helping area children and families.
