When I learned that my busy work schedule would not allow be to cover the monthly presentation of the Selma-Dallas County Chamber of Commerce’s Rising Star Award, I was surprisingly disappointed.
It took me a few moments to realize why missing such a simple award presentation evoked such a personal emotion. Then I realized, after covering multiple Rising Star Award presentation since September 2013, I have come to truly appreciate the beauty of the honor.
Meant to recognize those whose work ethic exemplifies excellent customer service, the Rising Star title shows deserving people just how much they matter to their employer and community.
The Selma-Dallas County Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors is responsible reviewing and selecting nominees.
Winn-Dixie’s Rod Lamar, Butler Truax Jewelers’ Kent Bearden, Rehab Associates, Inc.’s Eric Jackson, Park Place Nursing and Rehabilitation Center’s staff were just a few of the several honored within the last year.
While the honorees may be different, those I’ve witnessed receive the award give grateful, often surprised, reactions that make covering the event so fulfilling.
While some were shocked because they did not know they would receive the award prior to the presentation, far more were stunned to learn their dedication went unnoticed. That reminded me just how often society will recognize a celebrity for a minuscule act before their commend the average person for their something far more worthy.
People sometimes fail to realize that a small indication of appreciation can make a huge difference. I’m sure the Rising Star title and certificate, which is normally given during that particular employees off day, can make the remainder of the work day far more thrilling.
Not only am I grateful to be allowed multiple opportunities to witness such sweet moments, but also thankful to Selma-Dallas County Chamber of Commerce for taking the time to make those rare occasions possible.
They have helped spread joy to more than the Rising Star Award recipients.
