Passersby might have been confused at the scene outside of Sophia P. Kingston Elementary School Wednesday, as students held signs and walked jubilantly towards the school.

It’s not a sight we get to see very often, but it was refreshing.

The students were celebrating International Walk to School Day, which promotes healthy habits, safety and cleaner air. Most of us could use a little more exercise in our daily routine. We should continue to encourage our youth to spend time outside. Doing a healthy activity is something we can all get behind.

Our youth are growing up in today’s technology-based world, where it’s hard to go five minutes without touching a phone, computer or watching a television screen. It’s great that technology continues to grow, but sometimes it’s great just to be outside and enjoy the world.

“Technology does play a major role in why kids don’t move these days,” said Erica Lumpkin, who serves as the physical education instructor at Sophia P. Kingston. “They have the Nintendo, the Playstation and they don’t want to go outside and move.”

International Walk Day, which continues to grow each and every year, which is a positive thing for our youth.

We could probably all learn a lesson from these youth. It’s easy after a long day at work to come in and throw our legs up on the couch and watch television, but maybe instead we should take a walk.
