Sparky is still missing. The Selma Fire Department “firedog” costume was stolen in October has not yet been returned.
With Sparky already missing out on being Monster March’s Grand Marshal, the fire department is brainstorming ideas how to raise enough money to quickly purchase another costume.
“Right now, we’re asking for donations. Donations can be brought to the office of the fire chief, and it would be greatly appreciated,” said Selma Fire Chief Mike Stokes. “Unfortunately, the fire department budget just doesn’t have money in it to buy [another costume].”
Da’Ron Waters, a firefighter who often portrayed the Dalmatian, said he hopes the department will be able to raise the money.
“It important because of the kids,” Waters said. “That’s really just the first thing I think of, the joy and the pleasure of seeing the kids faces when they see Sparky.”
The fire department said it will cost $4,600 to replace the costume, and they are hoping to do so before the Selma’s Christmas parade Dec. 6.
“We are really doing everything we can to make this happen before the Christmas parade,” Stokes said. “
Stokes said the department talked about having students raise money, even pocket change, and giving the school that raised the most a special treat.
Although there are no leads on the current whereabouts of the original costume, Waters and Stokes are still hopeful for its safe return.
“We’re still asking the public to look out for it,” Waters said. “If you have an idea of where he is, or who has him, report it and no questions will be asked.”
Donations can be made at any of the fire stations in town. The chief’s station, Station 3, is located at 1500 Broad Street between Church’s Chicken and Brown’s Drug Store. Station 2 is located at 2401 Selma Avenue. Station 4 is located at 800 Cahaba Road. Station 5 is located at 1104 Woodrow Avenue.
