Sparky’s return possible due to donations from schools, private donors

The bands, fire trucks, decorative floats and local businesses in Saturday’s Christmas parade did a great job of getting the city in the holiday spirit. But all of them — and even jolly ‘ole Santa Claus — were overshadowed by the return of one of Selma’s own.
Sparky the Firedog, the mascot of the Selma Fire Department, made a surprise return during the parade, bringing smiles to the faces of the hundreds of children in attendance.
Santa has his day and it’s coming soon —17 days and counting — but Saturday was all about Sparky, who knew how to return in style.
He was welcomed back with open arms by thankful youth, glad to see their favorite firedog back in town.
Sparky’s return was made possible due to the donations of local volunteers and schools.
Among the donors were Selma City Schools, Dallas County Schools, Meadowview Elementary, Ellwood Christian Academy, Morgan Academy, Michael Johnson’s Foundation and othes who privately gave donations.
Because of all the donations, the department was able to raise enough money to quickly replace the mascot.
We would like to thank all of those that supported the cause and collectively made the day, and future days, of children all around the city.
This once again showed the generosity of Selma.
As soon as news broke that the original Sparky costume had been stolen, schools starting pitching in and trying to help any way they could.
Once the old costume was found in bad shape, the donations kept pouring in.
Sparky represents more than just a mascot to Selma.
He’s always been able to make area youth smile and laugh.
Now, he’s another reminder of the giving nature of our city.
