Santa Claus is not the only one coming to town this Christmas.
Patterson Hood, co-founder of the band Drive-By Truckers, is coming to Selma to celebrate Christmas with family and friends and sing at the second annual Art Jam to be held at the Walton Theatre on Saturday, Dec. 27 at 6 p.m.
“This is the second year that we’ve got it going on,” said Clay Carmichael, representative of the Blackbelt Benefit Group and Grow Selma. “We just wanted to do it to show the Walton Theatre and what can be done in there and show off local artists and of course bring good music here
Carmichael said he is looking forward to the show and seeing Patterson Hood play and sing.
“I’m a big fan of Drive-By Truckers … and I found out that he was related to the Patterson’s here,” Carmichael said. “I’m just really looking forward to him coming and playing.”
It’s not only Carmichael that is excited to have Hood in town this holiday season. Hood’s aunt and uncle are from Selma and are more than happy that he will be here to celebrate Christmas.
“I see Pat on an average of once or twice a year, and I’m very excited to have him come here,” said Scott Patterson, Hood’s uncle. “I’ve seen his band, the Drive-By Truckers and I’ve been to his concerts, but I’ve never seen his one man show.”
According to Patterson, Hood has loved music all of his life and comes from a musical background. Hood’s father is famous for being a member of The Swampers from Muscle Shoals’ FAME Studios.
“Pat grew up in the music business,” Patterson said. “He grew up in the music world.”
Patterson said he was immensely looking forward to Hood coming to Selma.
“I’m excited about it. We’ve already bought tickets,” Patterson said. “I’m tickled to death that he’s coming here.”
Patterson’s wife, Mary Ann, bought tickets for the whole family early on so they could be sure to get great seats for the show.
“He’s hard working, and he’s paid his dues,” Patterson said. “We want to support Pat, so we bought tickets like everyone else.”
Patterson talked about Hood like he was his own son, saying how proud he is of his accomplishments and that he deserves the best.
“It’s thrilling for me, but mostly I’m thrilled for Pat. He’s been a musician since he was a young man, so I’m really excited for him,” Patterson said. “I’m really excited to see him, but it’s really about Pat, it’s not about me.”
Hood will be the feature performer, following Destiny Brown who will play during the VIP show and The Band of Heathens who will open up for Hood.
“We always try to do a national act, and then bring some local artists in to all of our events,” Carmichael said. “We try to put the local musicians out [there].”
Tickets for the show are $35 for general admission, or $65 for the VIP experience starting at 5 p.m.
