Former Selma High School star Malcolm Riley’s big night resulted in one of the upsets of the year in college basketball. Riley, now at Texas Southern, helped lead the Tigers past No. 25 ranked Michigan State 71-64 Saturday.
Riley, the son of Selma Police Chief William Riley, scored 20 points and added seven rebounds in Texas Southern’s first win over an Associated Press top 25 team since 1994. Riley scored five of the Tigers’ 16 points in overtime.
Riley’s dad, who watched the game from a hotel room, couldn’t have been more proud of his son.
“We were yelling and screaming because the game was so close,” William said. “It was close the whole game so we were yelling. He was having an awesome game.”
William used to coach his son back when they were in Newport, Va. Back then, behind Malcom’s strong play the Monarchs won city league championships.
”It reminded me of the Malcolm that took us to undefeated championships,” William said.
Riley knocked in two free throws before halftime to pull Texas Southern within 30-25 Saturday.
“When they got to halftime and Texas Southern was only down five, I was like ‘They’ve got a chance,’” William said.
They had more than a chance.
Michigan State took a quick seven point lead in the second half, but a dunk by Riley helped to spark a 7-0 run that tied the game. Michigan State threatened to run away again, only to have Chris Thomas and Riley lead a rally that sent the game to overtime tied 55-55.
Riley also had a big game Tuesday as the Tigers fell to Auburn 61-60. He scored 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting and added five rebounds.
Texas Southern’s next game is at Kansas State Dec. 28.
The Tigers are currently on a ten game road trip.
