The inmate who escaped from the Dallas County Jail for the second time Dec. 29 appeared in court for a bond hearing Monday.
Michael Christian, 44, was charged with first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy, first-degree burglary, two counts of second-degree escape and first-degree theft of property charges. Dallas County District Judge Bob Armstrong issued him a $500,000 bond on his most recent escape charge.
Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson said his legal team also revoked the $750,000 bond he was issued under the first-degree rape charge. The bond was originally $150,000 but was raised in circuit court in early December 2013, according to a previous Times-Journal article.
“We’re glad Judge Armstrong set a high bond on the escape charge,” Jackson said.
The suspect broke through a ceiling area where inmates aren’t allowed left through a door that should have been secured, walking out of the jail unnoticed, according to Sgt. Mike Granthum with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.
A guard spotted Christian once he left the perimeter of the facility, and deputies were alerted, Granthum said.
Christian was on high-level security at the time with his trustee status revoked because of the Nov. 28 escape incident.
After learning that Christian may have been in Sardis, authorities found him hiding in a closet of an abandoned house. He complied with deputies during the arrest, and no one was injured during the escape, Granthum said.
The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office said the incident may have been due to an officer error, and anyone responsible will be disciplined.
Christian escaped the first time when he was serving work detail. He dropped from the ceiling and into the lobby, which is not a secure area.
After the suspect allegedly stole a truck from River Road and visited his father’s home. The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office and Cuba Police Department arrested Christian the following day at a rest stop on Interstate 20/59.
Christian is under a stricter high-level security, which requires additional cell checks.
