Harriet Winchester revived a sluggish Keith offense in the third quarter Friday and the Lady Bears rolled past Southside 49-22.
Stuck in a low scoring, slow paced game at halftime, it was clear Keith wanted to change the tempo. Winchester scored all 18 Bears points in the third quarter — part of her game high 25 — to help Keith (13-5) gain some separation.
“The biggest thing was going from playing sluggish in the first half to putting us on her shoulders in the third quarter,” Keith coach Cecil Williams said of Winchester.
Despite the final margin, Southside got what it hoped for in the first half. The Lady Panthers (3-15) kept the game in the half court and didn’t allow Keith a single fast break score. Keith still led 15-12 at halftime, but Southside seemed to be the team most comfortable with the style of game.
Keith adjusted in the second half, playing man-to-man defense and turning steals into transition points.
Winchester showed off an array of skills in the third, knocking in a three-pointer, forcing her way into the paint for an old fashioned three-point play and knocking down a midrange jumper.
Keith 32-20 at the end of the third quarter. The lead quickly swelled to 18 in the opening minutes of the final quarter and Southside was unable to mount a rally.
“We could not keep the foul count down,” Southside coach Jason Bothwell said. “It was just whistle blow after whistle blow after whistle blow and then they were on the line again.”
Calvondrea Blackmon led Southside with 10 points.
Shatavia Moore scored eight points for the Lady Bears.
