Old Grumbles Alley wall collapses

The wall of the once Grumbles Alley restaurant came tumbling down last week.
Bricks lay in shambles after part of the right façade of the building fell Thursday and more rained down Monday.
“I’m really not sure [what happened],” said Dianne Smitherman, who owns the building. “It’s an old building and the mortar is starting to deteriorate like many old buildings in town.”
Along with the age of the building, Smitherman said she believes weather and traffic played a role in the wall giving out.
“I’m sure the vibrations of the trucks didn’t help, and with the wet weather we’ve had, it just collapsed,” Smitherman said.
She has plans to get the structure fixed and hopes that it will happen quickly.
“As soon as I can get [a structural engineer] to look at it and talk with the building inspector and [Fire] Chief [Mike] Stokes we’ll go from there,” Smitherman said.” “Hopefully, that will be this week.”
Smitherman said she plans on meeting with an engineer by Thursday to begins repairs.
“I’m anxious to go ahead and get it repaired,” Smitherman said.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that Smitherman has had problems with the building. She said around four years ago, another part of the building gave out and collapsed.
“A few years ago, the corner by the parking lot started to crumble,” Smitherman said. “And we had that fixed.”
