There were a lot of rumors going around social media Friday concerning Southside High School, but Dallas County School Superintendent Don Willingham said the school is safe and was put on a “soft” lockdown as a precaution.
Southside High School, Tipton Middle School and Southside Primary went on lockdown because of comments that were made on social media Thursday night. Willingham said the precaution was a “soft” lockdown, meaning no one is allowed in or out of the building except for a parent checking out a child.
“We’re being proactive in the safety [of the students]. There’s no issue,” Willingham said. “We’ve been following Facebook, and I understand there were threats of things that were going to happen, so we talked to all the principals in the South zone. We’re on a soft lockdown, which means we lock all the external doors to the school but the inside is carrying on as normal.”
Willingham said deputies with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department were at Southside Friday, and Selma Police Department officers were at Tipton as an extra precaution.
“I understand the parents’ concern for their children, but they are in good hands,” Willingham said. “There’s been no incidents at any of the schools, but we have had a huge amount of checkouts from parents who have heard the rumors that we did.”
One parent, Rosalyn Beal, went to Tipton to make sure everything was OK with her daughter.
“I came to check to see if everything was OK, and everything is fine,” Beal said.
Southside High School principal Clarence Jackson said beside the rumors going around, the school carried on as normal.
“We are having school with the students that we have here,” Jackson said. “There’s been a lot of rumors flying by way of social media that were not true, and so we’re basically on semi high alert. It’s fine [at the school].”
