The Selma and Dallas County Public Library is serving up something special for this year’s Black History Month.

The library will be having a three-day event — Sensational Selma Cooks — featuring three African American cooks.

“We’ve got really great cooks with really great reputations,” said Becky Nichols, Selma and Dallas County Public Library director.

The featured cook on Tuesday, Feb. 10 will be Laurine Pettway, Wednesday will be Sharon Jackson and Thursday will be Essie Maxwell.

“You have an opportunity to watch them cook their favorite recipes, which is going to be a fabulous lunch,” Nichols said. “It’s both a fun learning time, as well as a scrumptious eating time.”

Jan Parker, the organizer of the event, said she is looking forward to the three-day cooking demonstrations, and she is hoping it will draw a crowd.

“Last year, we had a great turnout. It was the first year, and I think our cooks were so excited about it,” Parker said. “We’re just very excited to be celebrating Black History Month.”

Not only will guests have the opportunity to watch and learn from great cooks, they will also get a helping of the cuisine.

“In coming to the program, you’re also entitling yourself to a wonderful lunch for $8,” Nichols said. “What we’re inviting the public to is a chance to watch and learn from really great cooks.”

The library is always having events and reasons to bring people together, but Nichols said this one is special because it is celebrating Black History Month by highlighting the three cooks.

Each lunch begins at noon and tickets are $8. Seating is limited to 30 spots a day, so the library is encouraging those that want to participate to make their reservations as soon as possible.
