The city has its own Let’s Move campaign, and so far the city has completed four of five goals.
“Selma has done very well within this program,” said Kate Wiedenan, Let’s Move implementation specialist. “I am here to help them move through their last gold medal so they can become a five gold medal city.”
Geannie Evans, Selma Mayor George Evans’ wife, is leading the Let’s Move Selma program and said she is excited about the progress the city has made and is looking forward to earning that last gold medal.
According to the healthy communities and healthy future website, goal one is to provide children with a healthier start by having “local elected officials commit to helping early care and education program providers incorporate better practices for nutrition, physical activity and screen time into their programs.”
Goal two is to encourage caregivers and officials to display MyPlate in various locations allowing children to be better aware of what a healthy meal looks like.
Goal three is to provide healthy food for children through meal programs.
Goal four, the only goal that Selma does not have a gold medal in, is to provide access to healthy foods in venues that offer or sell food and beverages. This includes vending machines, which is what Let’s Move Selma is currently working on.
The last goal, goal five, is to increase physical activity and launch exercise programs or initiatives.
“They’ve done a whole lot of stuff around childhood obesity, and I’m here to recognize those efforts and help them in their last move, which is to put healthier food in the vending machines,” Wiedenan said.
