The Selma Art Guild is showing off an array of handcrafted quilts by Mary Margaraet Pettway and her relatives.
The show opened Feb. 8 and will be open every Friday and Saturday from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. through March 8, with a special showing March 2 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
“The quilts are wonderful,” said Jo Pate, the Selma Art Guild president.
“It is a feast for the eyes.”
The show features four rooms full of quilts, from small to large and many different color varieties.
“They’re all sorts of different patterns,” Pate said. “Every quilt is a different pattern, so right there it’s stupendous and then the colors are just out of this world.”
Pate said those that have attended the show were so impressed with the quality of the quilts and how much time Pettway and her relatives spent making them.
“They were amazed that anybody could do all that hand sewing, because they all are hand quilted,” Pate said.
“The people that came were just stunned with craftsmanship, the artwork, the beauty, the fact that they use whatever they can find and it shows.”
To go with the theme of the show, Pate said the Art Guild will be offering children third grade through fifth grade an opportunity to participate in a quilting workshop.
The children will make quilts with paper, and will have the real quilts to use as inspiration.
“That will expose kids to the quilting concept,” Pate said.
The class is $5 will be offered Saturday, Feb. 21.
Pate said this will give children the chance to open their minds to a different type of art while having examples from a highly talented artist and quilter.
