District Attorney Michael Jackson and the U.S. Attorney’s office of Mobile are hosting their annual Law Enforcement Training Conference Wednesday, April 15 and Thursday, April 16 at the Carl C. Morgan Convention Center.
The conference is designed to educate law enforcement officers on the latest updates in criminal investigations.
“They will learn a lot of different things,” Jackson said. “One of the major things we’re going to discuss this year is digital evidence, which includes evidence on cell phones, computers and that type of thing, that we can use for cases.”
With technology constantly changing, Jackson said it is important for law enforcement officers to stay up to date with the latest technology criminals are using to commit crimes.
“Digital evidence is always changing, and so we want to keep all of the officers aware of the latest trends that are going on with new technology,” Jackson said.
According to Jackson, cyber crimes like identity theft are becoming more common now that criminals have easier access to ways to steal personal information from electronic devices.
While digital evidence will be one of the main topics of discussion, the conference will also give officers a chance to learn about deadly force, FBI national security and top threats and the Hobbs Act, which is an anti-racketeering law.
The training session is Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (APOST) certified for executive level training and continuing education units.
More than 100 law enforcement officers from the Selma Police Department, Dallas County Sheriff’s Department, Alabama Bureau of Investigations, Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and other agencies are planning to attend.
“It is also a good networking [opportunity,] so we can further discuss some of the problems that are going on around here in Selma and Dallas County,” Jackson said.
Wednesday’s conference starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m. Thursday’s will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 12 p.m.
To sign up for the conference, officers can call the U.S. Attorney’s office in Mobile at (251) 441-5845. The registration fee is $50 per person.
