Selma Mayor George Evans has named Lebo Jones the interim director of the Selma Recreation Department. Jones, who has served with the recreation department since 2013, previously served as the city’s softball and baseball director. “Lebo has the experience with everything that is going on … he is the man to lead us right now,” Evans said at Thursday’s city council work session. The discussion revolved around whether Jones or football director Terry Jackson should take the reigns in an interim role. “I’m trying to do what I believe is in the best interest for us right now until the end of the summer,” Evans said. “I feel like right now the two of them working together is in the best interest of moving forward.” Elton Reece, who served as the director of the department the last two decades, passed away March 30. Jones said the recreation department has worked together through what has been a difficult last few weeks. “We’re moving forward just like we always have,” Jones said. “We have a lot of people that have been working out here for a long time and know what to do. Coach Reece was good at facilitating responsibilities so it’s been difficult without him, but it’s getting better every day.” Spring is one of the busiest times of the year for the department. Youth baseball and softball season kicked off with games Saturday and the Alabama Independent School Association track meet is coming up Wednesday and Thursday at Memorial Stadium. “We’ve got the AISA track meet, we’ve got the Battle of Selma, the Michael Johnson football camp, opening day — April is just a real busy month for us,” Jones said. “Everything has been planned months ago, so we are just moving forward.”
