AISA tennis championships unable to start

Morgan Academy was one of ten Alabama Independent School Association tennis teams ready to start their pursuit for a state championship Monday at Lagoon Park in Montgomery.
However, Mother Nature had other plans, as storms prevented the tournament from even getting underway. Play, which was set to start at 8 a.m. Monday, was originally postponed until 2 p.m., but storms kept coming and eventually all matches on day one were cancelled.
Morgan Academy head tennis coach Baxter Stinson said not a single point was played Monday. The tournament will resume Tuesday at 8 a.m. at Lagoon Park.
With more weather on the way — forecasts were calling for a 60 percent chance of rain Tuesday— Stinson said the AISA has implemented a change in first round matches to speed up the pace.
When a first round match reaches the third set, instead of playing an entire set, the two players will instead partake in a tiebreaker set. Stinson is hopeful that change and some good luck in the weather will allow the tournament to get back on schedule.
“If everything goes according to plan, we should be able to get it in,” Stinson said.
Tuesday’s schedule will emulate the one originally scheduled for Monday, which called for every match to be played except for the state championship.
As of Monday evening, it was unclear when and where the championship matches would be played. Stinson said there might be a scheduling issue with the courts at Lagoon Park for Wednesday, meaning the tournament could have to be played at another location. Last year, the tournament was scheduled for Lagoon Park, but the rain forced the championships to be played at Huntingdon College.
While organizers tried to figure out all of the logistics, the Senators were taking it easy Monday afternoon.
“We’re taking the kids to a movie and we’re going to cook supper and go to bed,” Stinson said.
The other teams participating in the tournament are Eastwood Christian, Fort Dale, Glenwood, Lee-Scott, Monroe, Northside Methodist, Springwood, The Lakeside School and Tuscaloosa Academy.
