A Selma man was sentenced to 20 years in prison Monday after Circuit Court Judge Jack Meigs revoked his probation.
Twenty-year-old Dewayne Jackson was out on probation for a 2011 robbery charge, when he was charged with attempted murder and two counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied building in August 2014.
“We will all be old folks by the time Dewayne Jackson gets out of prison,” said District Attorney Michael Jackson. “Another gunslinger has been taken off the streets.”
Jackson was arrested for the August 2014 charges Friday, March 13 after the Selma Police Department received an anonymous tip about him staying at a residence on the 1600 block of Weaver Street.
According to Lt. Curtis Muhannad, Jackson was arrested without any incident after officers executed a search warrant at the home.
Investigators also recovered a 9mm handgun and a fully loaded SKS assault rifle, along with two 30-round magazines from the residence.
According to a police report from the 2014 shooting, Jackson shot a 28-year-old Selma man at the Chanticleer Apartments on the 1200 block of Woodrow Avenue.
The victim had a gunshot wound to the chest and was eventually airlifted to a Montgomery hospital for further treatment.
According to the report, Jackson shot the victim after they had a conversation outside of the victim’s apartment.
“Mr. Hunter advised that while he [was] walking away from Jackson, he felt his body go numb and saw smoke coming from his chest area,” the report stated.
“Mr. Hunter advised that once he turned around he saw muzzle fire coming from a gun in Jackson’s hands.”
The reports states Jackson continued to shoot at the victim, and two occupied apartments were fired into.
