More rain, severe weather possible

Selma and Dallas County has seen its fair share of rain and thunderstorms over the last couple of weeks, and it is expected to get even more over the weekend.
Events like the 150th Battle of Selma Re-enactment and the Rock ‘N’ Ribs Benefit could be threatened by more rain and the possibility of severe weather.
“We’re expecting our bigger rain storms to go through Friday night and Saturday morning,” meteorologist Jason Davis with the National Weather Service in Birmingham. “Behind that, more storms could develop, though not as widespread. Those are the ones we’re watching in the afternoon and early evening for any severe potential.”
According to Davis, the rain should move into the area Friday afternoon.
”There is a slight chance of rain during the afternoon Friday, and it increases to a 70 percent chance of showers and a few thunderstorms Friday night,” he said.
Those showers are expected to last into the morning, but the chances of rain doesn’t end there.
“Saturday that 70 percent chance of showers will continue through the morning,” Davis said. “It should become a bit more scattered by afternoon and not as widespread, but that is also the time frame we we’re looking at for the potential of severe storms as well.”
While rain is almost guaranteed, there are also threats of severe weather with the system.
“We’re looking at a potential of all types of severe weather, including damaging winds, large hail and also the possibility of some isolated thunderstorms,” Davis said.
Despite the rain, the Battle of Selma and the Rock ‘N’ Ribs Benefit are planning to go on rain or shine.
“We’re going to have [the battle] both days rain or shine,” said James Hammonds with the April 1865 Society, which is sponsoring the Battle of Selma. “We have delayed it before to let a shower or something go through, but we’ll be having it.”
Clay Carmichael with the Blackbelt Benefit Group, which sponsors the rib cook-off, said they have tents set up and the pavilion at Lions Fair Park will also be available for people to get underneath.
The Morgan Academy Color Run is also set to go on rain or shine.
Sunday is expected to be all clear of rain and warm out with a high of around 85 degrees, but Monday could see more rain back in the area.
“We do have some rain coming back in Monday night with some chances through Wednesday,” Davis said.
