Sunday is the grand finale for the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Selma.
The gates to the battlefield at Riverside Park will again open at 9 a.m. and there is a $7 admission fee to see the live re-enactment.
To start the day off, there will be a period worship service at 9 a.m. followed by a Civil War Memorial Service and history tour at historic Old Live Oak Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. Guests can hear stories about the men who fought in the Civil War and view the final resting place of many soldiers and historical people from the era.
Throughout the day, visitors can visit the sutlers and purchase tasty food and beverages and even buy clothing and accessories reminiscent of the 1800s.
Prior to the re-enactment of the Battle of Selma, Union and Confederate soldiers will be on hand to perform military troop and camp inspections.
Like most everyone, James Hammonds, president of the April 1865 Society, is excited to see day’s main event unfold.
“I would guess that I would be most looking forward to the finale, the actual battle re-enactment,” Hammonds said. “This is going to be the biggest re-enactment that we’ve seen here in years.”
According to Hammonds, there will be more than 1,300 re-enactors, over 100 horses, four horse-drawn canons and 40 canons to make this the largest Battle of Selma re-enactment.
With Saturday’s battle behind them, the re-enactors are all ready for the main showing. The battle is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., and Hammonds suggested that people arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the battle.
Weather continues to be a question, but Hammonds said rain or shine the battle will be fought.
