The small community of Minter has big plans for this weekend.
The E.M. Brown Community Center in Minter will have its fifth annual May Day event Saturday. The event will begin at 10 a.m. at 263 County Road, Juction 38.
The celebration will feature vendor booths, face painting and games. In addition, a gospel choir will perform the first hour of the celebration. At noon, individuals will plant a maypole. In the evening a DJ will spin records.
People from all over the region come to the growing event, said E.M. Brown Community Center board member Valerie Reubin.
“People from out of town who used to live in this area attend the May Day,” she said. “We have people come from Mobile, Georgia and Florida to come back home to this event.”
Minter residents sometimes travel to Selma to attend events, but Reubin said the May Day event might actually help change that.
“We started May Day as a way to create funds, so we can one day build another community center,” she said.
Money paid by vendors at the celebration will go toward funding a new community center in the future.
The goal of having a new community center is on fellow board member Chellette Henderson’s radar.
“We have our minds set on a new center. The (current) building’s really old, and it’s outdated,” she said. “We want a new building that will house our senior citizens and youth activities.”
Henderson said the event is an excellent opportunity for the community to unite. She invites people from all areas to attend.
Last year, the May Day attracted a huge crowd.
She said she hope this year’s event will continue to pull in more people.
“May Days are big events in this area,” Henderson said. “We’re glad ours is building.”
