For the first time in 17 years, the Wallace Community College Selma baseball team will take part in the Alabama Community College Conference postseason Friday at Historic Eagle Stadium in Ozark.

The Patriots, the No. 5 seed from the south division of the ACCC will face Southern Union, who finished as the No. 4 seed from the north division at 12:30 p.m. Wallace baseball coach Frank Elliott said his team has managed to come up big when games are on the line, which is why the Patriots are having one of their most successful seasons in decades.

“The players we have this year, it seems like they can get it done right when we need it most,” Elliott said. “We have lost some games we were right in but when we need it most these guys seem to step up and get it done. That’s a little bit different from last year’s team.”

Elliott credits the team’s pitching for keeping the Patriots in games. He said pitchers Toby King and Alex Campbell are among a handful of players that have had four-year colleges keeping tabs on them.

“We’ve had good pitching all year to give us a chance to win. I think that’s the key is our pitching has been right there,” Elliott said. “We’ve had a game or two that has been a little bit out of sorts but for the most part our pitching has been there to really hold us in games.”

Wallace finished the season 24-28. Southern Union is 28-21.
