Selma High band ready for jazz show

Nothing but good tunes belted from Selma High School’s band room Monday, as the jazz band readies for Tuesday’s concert.
Band director Brandon Williams said the band is more than ready for the spotlight.
“We plan to give a great show and a great presentation, not only for the Selma High School program, but the city of Selma and definitely Selma City Schools,” he said.
In late May, the band began practicing music for the show from artists like Duke Ellington, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Erskine Hawkins and more. The featured songs will range from the 1960s to the 1990s.
“We’re going to have two different sessions,” William said. “The first session will be specifically the old school jazz. The next session will be kind of smooth jazz stuff that we can make up in our heads and minds. It’s something a lot of people know. It’s going to be a lot of 70s and 80s music in there.”
Students are excited about the upcoming performance, Williams said. He said the students have worked hard to get to this point.
Trombone player Christian Prevo said it’s been a lot of hard work, but that he’s looking forward to performing Tuesday night.
“I worked stupendously hard,” he said. “I practice over my music at home, and I go through the hard stuff first before I go to the easier parts.”
Williams said the concert will bring live music to Selma, which isn’t easy to find. He believes people will enjoy the show and hopes people will talk up the jazz band and that the performance builds momentum for the program.
“I look forward to putting on a great show for the people of Selma,” said Selma High School rising senior Ashley Wilson. “It will bring us all together. I really hope everyone enjoys tomorrow because we really worked hard.”
The jazz concert will be held at the Carl C. Morgan Convention Center at 7 p.m.
Tickets for the event are $15, which will include a full dinner.
Tickets can be purchased from Selma High School’s front office or the band room. Tickets will be available at the door tonight.
All proceeds from the event will go toward band equipment, transportation and other needs. For more information, call 874-1680.
