The Selma Art Guild is gearing up for a solo exhibit featuring the winner and “Best of Show” from July’s art competition.
The artist, Toska Courbron, is no stranger to being recognized for her work, as she has won multiple awards in her time. She won first place in watercolor for the second consecutive year and best of show for an acrylic painting. She also was named as an honorable mention for a second watercolor painting.
“She’s just very good,” said Sally Jordan, the Selma Art Guild president. “I think she has beautiful pictures and is just very talented.”
According to her website, Courbron is currently on the Watercolor Society of Alabama Board of Directors, a member of the Selma Art Guild, Montgomery Art Guild, Alabama Plein Air Artists and Alabama Pastel Society among others.
“I enjoy painting because I am creating something new. It’s always a challenge and I am always learning from the experience,” Courbron said in an artist statement on her website.
“I feel that the act of creating a work of art is and should be personal and intimate to the artist. However, I am thrilled when someone enjoys or makes some personal connection with my paintings.”
Jordan said early on in June, Courbron taught a three-day watercolor workshop at the Art Guild, giving participants a close up look into the work she does.
They also have plans for her to come back in October to hold a one-day pastel workshop.
“Most of us can try, but we just can’t do what she does. She really just has a natural ability,” Jordan said. “But she really has studied a lot. It’s not just ability; she’s learned a lot.”
The show will feature 30 works of art by Courbron, along with work from various Art Guild members.
Works of art will be for sale during the exhibition.
The show is set to open Sunday with a reception from 2-4 p.m.
The show is free to the public and light refreshments will be served.
The show will continue to be open every Friday and Saturday from 12-4 p.m. during the month of July. The gallery is located at 508 Selma Ave.
“There’s always good food and it’s free,” Jordan said.
“I think it’s excellent work and I think people would enjoy just coming and seeing something.”
