Good food has become big businesses

Blame it on cable television and the endless cooking and food shows that are on 24/7, but good eating has become a sizable industry lately.
Americans have always loved a good meal, but lately tourism departments have realized there is money to be made in promoting some of the state’s best restaurants and dishes.
We have already seen one local establishment, Lannie’s BBQ, being honored as part of the Alabama Department of Tourism’s inaugural Alabama Barbecue Hall of Fame. The hall will draw attention to some of the state’s finest barbecue joints from Huntsville to Mobile. The promotion was well-conceived and includes a smartphone app, traveling photo exhibit and documentary film.
Not to be outdone, the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association has gotten in the game and just launched a competition to find the best steak in the state.
The contest begin June 20 and will run through Aug. 30, giving steak lovers a chance to have their voices heard. At least one local establishment, Tally Ho Restaurant, has been nominated.
To be nominated for the best steak, the restaurant must be located in Alabama and the product has to be a beef steak and be on the menu at the restaurant. No votes for individuals will be accepted.
Owner Paul Wilkerson said even if the Tally Ho doesn’t advance in the competition, it was an honor to be nominated by happy customers.
But we should help support the local business in the contest. To vote for the best steak in Alabama, visit bamabeef.org and click the “Alabama’s Best steak” icon, text BEEF to 20566 or scan a QR code on posters and advertisements inside the restaurants.
