On tap: Draft beer sales in Selma

In the next few days, draft and keg beer will start being available at bars and restaurants throughout Selma.
It’s been a long time coming, but the Selma City Council made the right decision in approving the ordinance.
While there are many who oppose any alcohol sales for various reasons, much smaller communities than Selma allow draft beer sales. We believe residents deserve the same choices here that they would have in say Demopolis or Wetumpka, communities less than half the size of Selma.
While the change might help restaurants improve their bottom lines, the change is also key to the continued revitalization of the downtown and growing the entertainment district. It’s hard to imagine that district reaching its full potential without the change.
Those who support the ordinance also hope a microbrewery might be in the works.
Breweries and craft beer have become big business in Alabama, and our local entrepreneurs should have the opportunity to tap into that market as well.
