The Selma Art Guild will showcase the work of just male artists in August, a first for the organization.
“We’ve never had an all-male show,” said Jo Taylor, guild recording and publicity secretary. “[President] Sally Jordan just came up with the idea that we would do an all-male show and call it ‘Men at Work.’”
Taylor said as of Friday afternoon, the guild had six men that had committed to participating, and they are hoping for more.
“There are a lot of men artists and artisans in this area, and we want to try to get them to start showing with us more,” Taylor said. “It seems like sometimes in our art guild we have a lot of females that show with us, and we wanted to try to pull in more men.”
The Art Guild is always coming up with new ideas for shows to keep people interested.
“The Art Guild’s mission is the promotion and education of the visual arts in this area, and we’re just trying to keep visual arts in the forefront around this area,” she said. “I’m looking forward to creating something a little bit different.”
Men that are interested in showcasing their work can call Taylor at 412-3852 and drop off their pieces Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the guild. If participants are not able to drop off their work during that time, Taylor said they can call her to schedule another time.
“I’m looking forward to seeing the different art work from the men,” Taylor said. “This feels fun to me. Just a little off beat, fun thing to do.”
The Men at Work show will open Aug. 9 with a reception from 2-4 p.m. The gallery will remain open every Friday and Saturday in August from 12-4 p.m.
