A Selma man was sentenced to 15 years in prison for burglarizing a house in May 2014 and stealing two televisions.
Derrick Rayshun Martin, 46, was sentenced after he pleaded guilty to third-degree burglary last week in Circuit Judge Jack Meigs courtroom, according to Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson.
“Enough is enough with these burglars,” Jackson said. “Derrick Martin needs to pack his suitcase because he is going off to prison for a long time.”
According to a statement from detective Ray Blanks with the Selma Police Department, Martin broke into a home on Deer Ridge Drive. A witness that was sitting on the porch at the time of the burglary told officers that he saw a man dressed in dark clothing walk up to the back window of a house and break the window.
“He stated that the subject walked away and returned after a few minutes and entered the residence through the broken window,” Blanks said in a statement. “[The witness] stated that the subject stayed inside the residence for several minutes, then exited the residence and walked away.”
When officers arrived on scene, they could not locate the burglar.
“Officer Moore was advised that a black male subject went into the apartment next door,” Blanks’ statement read. “Once assistance arrived on scene, officers made contact with the occupant of that address to ask if any male subject wearing dark clothing [was] in the residence.”
According to Blanks’ statement, when the homeowner opened the door, officers saw the alleged burglar on the floor that appeared to be asleep.
According to Blanks, officers asked Martin to stand and noticed several cuts on his legs, knees and hands.
Blanks said officers observed blood on the window ledge and blinds and found two televisions that were placed by the window.
According to court records, Martin pleaded guilty to robbery in 2000 and has a history of criminal activity dating back to the 90s.
